Wayne Sleeth
Wayne Sleeth (b. Lincolnshire, 1966) is a British contemporary painter based in France. For the past ten years, Sleeth has set aside brushes for spray paint, marker, and collage, taking the most iconic motifs of nineteenth-century painting — Monet's waterlilies chief among them — and reworking them in the visual language of contemporary street art. His MonetMonetMonet paintings hold two paintings in a single surface. At a distance: the unmistakable atmosphere of Monet's Giverny — the pond, the lily pads, the light. Up close: drips, fluorescent paint, and the name "Monet" scribbled obsessively across the canvas like a mantra or a graffiti tag. The result is at once homage and disruption. Sleeth has exhibited at the Tate Modern and across European capitals, and his artwork is held in private and public collections including the U.S. Library of Congress.
